Ch'askin, the great thunderbird spirit, aids and protects the people. This design represents a legend from the Shíshálh nation. It is said, Ch'askin helped Chief Spelmu'lh who was the first person who built longhouses and many villages there. The story of Ch'askin is a story of protection, friendship and the many times Ch'askin has come to aid the Shishalh people when they were in great need.
Another depiction often told by various Salish villages in the region is a tale when Orca was eating all the salmon in the bay and the people felt defeated and called upon the great Thunderbird (Ch’askin) for assistance and there he showed up, to aid the people from Orca eating all of the food that the people cherished and relied upon.
